WORLD’S LARGEST A.A. MEETING
50,000 MEMBERS GATHER AT THE MINNEAPOLIS METRODOME FOR THE INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS
(June 30, 2000-Minneapolis, MN) — 50,000 AA members, from 87 countries around the world, gathered this evening at the Minneapolis Metrodome to participate in the world’s largest AA meeting, marking the start of the International Convention 2000 of Alcoholics
Anonymous.
One AA member representative from each country in attendance carried their country’s flag in a special ceremony at the beginning of the meeting. The convention, which continues through Sunday (7/2), marks the 65th Anniversary of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Throughout the weekend, hundreds of smaller AA meetings, workshops, and panels are scheduled around-the-clock at multiple venues around Minneapolis. Meetings will be conducted in English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Portuguese, Polish, Swedish, Finnish, and other languages, as well as American Sign Language.
On Saturday evening (7/1), the "Old-Timers Meeting" takes center stage at the
Metrodome. Fifteen AA members celebrating 40 or more years of sobriety, will be chosen by lottery to speak at the meeting, sharing their individual experience, strength and hope
The International Convention 2000 of Alcoholics Anonymous is the largest convention in Minneapolis history. The 50,000 conventioneers are housed in 97 hotels located within a 25-mile radius of Minneapolis. Stores and restaurants in the downtown area have made special
preparations to handle the crowds.
Alcoholics Anonymous, founded in 1935, holds international conventions every five years. The first was held in Cleveland in 1950. Currently, AA’s General Service Office estimates a count of 100,000 AA Groups in 150 countries, with a total membership exceeding 2 million people.
Al-Anon, a fellowship for friends and relatives of alcoholics, is also meeting in Minneapolis offering a full slate of Al-Anon meetings and workshops.
